The blood is a wonderful fluid which is thousands of millions of tiny cells floating in the liquid that we call plasma. This plasma and these cells together enable us to live. They carry the foods energy to the various parts of our bodies. The cells breathe; carry the life-giving oxygen from the air to all parts of our bodies. The cells and the plasma also carry away waste products but we do not need in our body, and help us get rid of them through our lungs, kidneys and bowels.

Blood is a liquid when it is in our blood vessels, but have you noticed that when you cut your finger, blood flows for a little while and then it stops? Why does it do this? It is all part of God’s plan for preserving life.

There are several kinds of cells in the blood. Most of the cells are what we call red blood cells. These carry the oxygen from our lungs to the rest of our body. There are fewer white cells but they are important too. They can help our bodies to fight infections and disease. Non of the blood cells are made of blood itself, mall of these cells eventually ware out, and have to be replaced by the body making more.

If our bodies are going to make good blood cells, we must give them the proper “building” materials. We do this by eating the right kind of food, and by not eating things that will harm our blood. A variety of foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole-green cereals, and nuts will help us to have good blood.

Other important helps in making our blood healthy are breathing deeply of clean, fresh air; drinking enough pure water, and getting enough rest and exercise.

Anemia means inferior, or poor, blood. We have learnt that our blood cells ware out and must be replaced by new ones. The body can make the new needed cells only if it has a variety of good foods to work with. If the food is not the right kind, the body cannot make the new cells. This causes anemia.

Anemia can also be caused by loosing large quantities of blood. If a person has an injury and bleeds, he may be anemic for a while, but if the loss of blood is not too great, his body will usually replace the lost amount rather quickly.

Malaria causes our blood cells to break down, which can result in anemia. Intestinal parasites cause us to loose blood and thus cause anemia, too. Some people have a disease which causes their red blood cells to dissolve, and this causes anemia. The symptoms of anemia are tiredness and paleness. The paleness may be noticed in the finger nails, eyelids, and mouth. If you think you have anemia, you should have your blood tested at a hospital so that the doctor can tell what kind of anemia you have in order to advice treatment. If you notice that you are bleeding from any part of the body, you should report this to your hospital or clinic at once, as it may be serious.
