You many know or may not know it, but hitting a baseball requires the application of some laws of physics. Yes, that is right; hitting a baseball has something to do with science in addition to your natural ability. Part of the reason Major League Players are able to send a ball flying at speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour is because they have learnt how to utilize these simple laws to generate power on their strike.
The ability to hit a baseball like a professional comes down to a combination of factors. These factors have to be applied together to generate the desired results. That means that just because you aced physics in high school does not mean you will be able to hit a baseball like a pro.
Practice and Learning Information
In sports, how far you go is determined by how hard you practice. The rule holds true even for baseball. With many youngsters dreaming of making it to the major leagues one day; professional baseball training has become a lucrative venture. For those who cannot afford to join such centers, there is a lot of information available on this topic. Such information can be found in books and the internet. Hundreds of video tutorials can be found on the internet on this subject.
The quality of the hit, however, is determined by a host of other elements including the following:
The bat
There is more to a baseball bat than meets the eye. Baseball bats come in different weights and lengths. These two quantities, that is, weight and length are used to calculate the “bat drop”. The bat drop worked out by subtracting the length of the bat from the weight of the same bat. For instance, a bat that is 28 inches long, weighing 17 ounces has -11 as its drop. Bat drop determines the quality and price of the bat. A higher drop number means a better and more expensive bat. Other factors which should be taken into consideration when selecting a bat are the batters weight and height.
Plate Discipline
This is simply the ability to distinguish between a pitch which can be hit and a hit which cannot be hit. This might sound like something simple to do, but it is extremely important. Swinging away at everything that is thrown at you is juvenile. Practice to follow the flight of the ball before it even leaves the pitcher’s hand all the way to your bat. This will enable you to adjust accordingly for the strike. Start with a small strike zone and expand it with the developing strike count.
Good Bat Grip
Do not clutch to the bat until your hands start to hurt. A good grip should be firm yet relaxed. Your whole body should be free and relaxed. Hold the bat closer to the fingers than the palm of the hand. This will provide you with more control, faster reaction time and eliminate bat drag.
Batting Stance
When you take to the batter’s box, take a comfortable stance that will make you feel confident and balanced.
By making use of these practices and by applying them constantly in your practices, your batting abilities are guaranteed to improve in no time.
