Books will only teach you programming language but not how to solve difficult problems. Books will not instruct you on how to develop a new application. As they say experience is the best teacher and this applies to programming.

If programming interests you then you can go ahead and learn but don’t keep in mind how long it might take. You do not have to learn programming for your own application if you do not find it interesting; there are freelance programmers to develop applications for you at a fee. If you want a program developed for selling, you could hire the same for that reason. All you will need to do is worry about the selling and marketing the software.

Programming can take up to 5 years to learn but there is no way of telling if one can learn programming faster than that or not. Technology is growing very fast meaning that you too should be in a position to adapt to this fast change. This can be challenging and most programmers will tell you that considering the time needed to understand programming concepts.
